Shoulder Fracture Fixation

Repair damaged bones or soft tissue on the shoulder

What is a shoulder fracture fixation?

Our shoulders consist of bones that work together to enable the arm and shoulder to move and function smoothly. The bones include the humerus (upper arm bone), shoulder blade (scapula), and collarbone (clavicle). There is also the ball and socket joint, acromioclavicular joint, and sternoclavicular joint, as well as muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

When any of these bones become fractured, the damage can severely impact mobility and cause pain, stiffness, and discomfort. Fractures often occur due to injury or trauma from accidents and falls.

If there are displaced bones or an open fracture where the bone is poking through the skin, a shoulder fracture fixation surgery is normally required to repair the damage.

Shoulder fracture fixation surgery is often necessary to repair damaged bones or soft tissue.

How does shoulder fracture fixation surgery work?

A shoulder fracture fixation surgery involves locking the fractured bones back into their correct position using instruments such as plates, screws, or pins. Depending on the severity of the damage, bone grafting and soft tissue repair may also be required.

There are 2 types of shoulder fracture fixation surgery, these are:

  • External fixation: screws or pins are placed into the bone below and on top of the fracture site. Then, the bone fragments are realigned and the pins or screws are connected to a bar on the outside of the skin. The purpose of this procedure is to use the bar as a stabiliser to ensure the bones stay in the proper position while healing. After the patient’s fractured bones have healed, these fixations are removed.
  • Internal fixation: incisions are made in the skin over the fracture and any bone fragments are removed. Then, the bones are realigned to enable motion and function. In some cases, bone cement is used to hold the bones together. Next, metal screws and plates are placed inside and over the bones to keep them together during the healing process.

In general, internal fixation surgery of the shoulder often results in shorter hospitalisation stays, faster recovery, and reduces the risk of improper healing.

Benefits of shoulder fracture fixation

  • Treats shoulder fractures efficiently
  • Reduces pain and discomfort
  • Restores function and motion to the damaged shoulder
  • Prevents further shoulder issues due to the fracture

What conditions can shoulder fracture fixation treat?

A shoulder fracture fixation can treat the following issues:
  • Shoulder fractures
  • Shoulder pain and stiffness
  • Reduced motion in the shoulder

What results can I expect?

Depending on the severity of the shoulder fracture, you can expect to recover in approximately 4-6 weeks. After the surgery, you will be required to wear a sling and get as much rest as possible. You will be prescribed painkillers to reduce pain and aid in healing. Swelling may also occur during the first few days.

After a couple of weeks, you may be able to use your shoulder normally but may be advised to undergo physiotherapy to regain strength and flexibility in your shoulder. Follow-up appointments with your orthopaedic surgeon may also be necessary to monitor your healing and recovery progress.

Many patients reach full recovery and regain full motion and function of their shoulder after shoulder fixation surgery. However, it depends on the general health of the individual, age, and medical history.

Work closely with your orthopaedist and follow their recommendations for exercises and activities for the best results.

shoulder sling
Recovery from a shoulder fracture fixation requires the use of a sling to keep the area immobilised.

How many treatment sessions are needed?

Typically, only 1 shoulder fracture fixation surgery is needed at a time. Physiotherapy sessions may be required for a period afterward. The duration will depend on the severity of the injury and other factors.
shoulder fracture fixation recovery
Several patients regain full use of their shoulder after recovering from shoulder fracture fixation surgery.
Your orthopaedic surgeon will be able to provide you with a bespoke treatment plan, tailored to your needs and requirements.
